It’s funny how we as people move about our professional and social circles. We can just navigate our whole lives in our little orbits, brushing by others who are maneuvering in similar circles and not even know each other until one day, BAM! You hit! Or in this case, hit it off. This incredible woman and I have A LOT of mutual friends and colleagues in common. We’ve briefly met at a couple of functions over the years, but it never really sunk in until she called me looking to do a professional headshot session. I seriously can’t remember ever NOT knowing her now she is so much fun! Like so much fun, our session almost didn’t seem like a session at all. She comes from a kid’s camp background and is still involved in that world, so it was important to her that we got her outside in nature. Although outdoor on-location pics are always nice, I am a strong advocate that one should also just have a super simple, plain background shot to accompany those outdoor shots, so we came back to my studio in DT LA. Your face is the star of any good headshot. We want to see the intricacies and the personality up close and personal. This fun-loving gal did not disappoint. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the session.

People often approach doing a portrait session on the beach with trepidation. They think it’s cliché or cheesy for a number of reasons that are different for everyone. You know why the beach is such a popular shooting location? BECAUSE IT’S BEAUTIFUL. End of story. It’s beautiful in the harshest of sunlight, and it’s beautiful in what we professionals call the “magic hour”. The magic hour is basically that time of the evening when the sun is so low it’s nearly set or it has already, but the light is lingering for a little bit before it goes dark. It’s also called twilight or crepuscule. I love magic hour and I love a beach location shoot.

This bar mitzvah client of mine decided on a beach in Malibu for a pre-mitzvah portrait session. Of course the young man was the first priority, but it really is a big event for the whole family, which makes incorporating the entire immediate family into the shoot even more meaningful. It’s also nice for my shooting style to have more people involved to encourage action and discussion amongst each other… Things that help to get people out of their “oh my god there’s a camera on me” heads. Here are some of my favorite pictures from this super fun session with one way-too-photogenic family.

This girl rocks. She quite literally has it all… Brains, beauty, a sparkling personality, she’s thoughtful, fun to hang around and she’s got TALENT. Holy shit is this girl talented. If you don’t know her by name, there’s a good chance you’ve heard her play on something at some point. Google Leah Zeger, or better yet, just go to her website. She’s a bit of a superstar in her field, although she would never admit to such a statement, as she’s also humble and modest in the best way.

Because of her crazy touring schedule, her days in L.A. were limited and thus, we struggled to lock down a shoot day.  We ended up piggy backing on a music video shoot of hers for her new single, Plans Change. We didn’t know how much actual shooting time I’d get with her in between set ups for the video, but that kind of set up is really right up my alley. I’m pretty good with portraits under pressure and on top of it, the video production gave me a chance to do some fun documentary, behind the scenes pics. You all know how I feel about the photojournalistic stuff.

The day could not have been more fun. Abby Lyle just might be the best/coolest makeup artist I’ve ever met, and Rad Media Worx was fun as hell to shoot alongside of, and they killed the job they were hired to do.

Once you’ve looked at my pics, check out Leah’s music video. Once you’ve watched that, go buy the single.  Get your art on people. This one goes down smooth.

I made everyone come up on the roof for this next sequence of pics. I had to REALLY fight the urge to name today’s post “Fiddler On the Roof”. It wasn’t easy people. It wasn’t easy.

I’ve been trying to think of a title for today’s post that sums up this awesome woman, and then it hit me. She’s the bomb. That’s it. That’s all she wrote. This foxy lady is smart, thoughtful, kind and super caring. While there’s always a back and forth in a portrait session, she always brought it back to me, genuinely wanting to know my thoughts, goals and experiences. She was so sincere in her inquisitiveness and empathy. Basically just a lovely human being all the way around.  She’s also one hell of a dresser.   She was introduced to me by way of another incredible client of mine… I guess awesomeness travels in packs.  Here are a few of my favorite images from her headshot session 🙂

That’s what I call this hottie. YogaJOHN… All one word.

A friend and client of mine, the super talented Kristen Lem, arranged this photo shoot with yoga instructor, John Chen. When I was scheduling his session in my calendar that’s how I identified him. I knew he would be cool since he was coming to me from a woman I cannot say enough good things about, but I didn’t meet him until the two of them showed up to my studio ready for the session bringing with them coffee and bagels. He was so full of love and light that you couldn’t help but to love him! An Armenian woman whom I loved used to call me “MelissaJon”. She told me that adding “Jon” to someone’s name was a term of endearment so this YogaJohn thing really just happened organically.  If I’m being honest, I don’t know how I’ll call him anything else.

Here are some of my favorite pics from the session. If you want to meet the man in person, you can do by taking his class at Curative Yoga in Pasadena. You won’t regret time spent with YogaJOHN, I assure you.

When this family hired me to shoot their eldest daughters bat mitzvah, they were on the fence about whether or not they were going to do separate portrait session prior to the big day to use for things like a sign-in book, and other odds and ends relating to the event. I get it; scheduling time to pose for pictures some Muppety lady is taking of you is easily dismissible in the time-strapped world we live in. I am SOOOO glad they decided to do it!!! A separate portrait session is always great for me personally because it allows me one-on-one time in an intimate setting with just my clients… The kind of time that is impossible to achieve in the beautiful chaos of the actual event day.

When I do any kind of portrait session, I ALWAYS try to incorporate the potential for some kind of action. This very awesome young lady is big into books and dogs. I found a beach in Malibu that was dog friendly, and told them to bring their pup and some of her favorite books so we could incorporate her literary love into the shoot. Although she was the primary focus, the whole family was involved. It was so much fun!!!

Here are some of my favorite pics from the session… Stay tuned for a post of the bat mitzvah day!

I am super proud of today’s post. A regular client of mine brought me in for a very specific shoot. They had a clearly defined idea for a portion of their website where they wanted to show their students in fun, dignified, bright and engaging portraits. The girls they picked to be the subjects were absolutely lovely to shoot, and my client who also worked double duty as my production assistant is the bomb. I am so happy with how the photos and the finished project turned out! I feel like all the pieces came together to form the message they wanted to get out there.

Check out the finished project here once you’ve gotten a little taste from the screenshots below 🙂

This awesome woman is NOT a student!  She is my client and these are her posing for my test shots. I love them so much I had to include them.

You saw this photo in last week’s blog post from my favorite photos of the month.  The wind started up, crinkling the backdrop.  The above mentioned client/production assistant started blowing back trying to get it to straighten out.  Let’s just say she was successful in making me laugh… Not so much her mission.

We all do these days. I know what you’re thinking… Such a portrait session is not the most fun thing you could do with your afternoon and you’re not wrong.  That being said, I make them as fun and painless as possible.

Option 1:

I come to you for a natural light session lasting up to 2 hours.

Cost: $400 (additional fee for studio lighting.)

Option 2:

You come to my studio in down town for a 2-hour session.

Cost: $300

Option 3:

Beginning this March, I am doing what I call “Second Sunday.” No need to schedule an appointment; you just come to my studio anytime between the hours of 10:00 and 6:00 for a mini session lasting 20 – 25 minutes.

Cost: $100; $20 of which goes to charity.

I currently work with the Pasadena PAL, Five Acres, Harambee, and the PCD Foundation. You choose which charity you want to donate to.

My studio is located at 338 S. Ave 16 Los Angeles, CA 90031 Unit A12

Today’s blog post is from a full session at my studio for an incredible client who was in need of some professional photos that showed her bright personality. I think we nailed it.  I dare you to not fall into a trance looking at those deep blue, beautiful eyes!

I was pretty much a complete slacker this year at my family’s annual Brew and Pie Festival… Well, slacker when it came to having my camera on me. Not when it came to WINNING! My cousin and oldest friend and I totally kicked ass placing 3rd in the pie competition, AND I defended last year’s golf tournament 1st place trophy by coming in 3rd against some serious golfing competition. There was also an unofficial, weeklong corn hole tournament that my brother in law and I DOMINATED.

That’s right, I’m talking shit here in today’s blog post that has nothing to do with any of what I just said.

On the last day, I took a break from all my lounging and kicking ass and picked up my camera for some quick portraits of my sister’s family and the family of one of their closest friends.  They were too fun to not post.

Sometimes you just need to hire a professional photographer to come shoot your family at your home… Even if you don’t like having your picture taken, which for sure 2 out of the 4 people shown here do not. Other than having to fight the urge to take their dog home with me, shooting this handsome family was a bright spot in my week.
