Because I live in sunny California, I do not have seasons to mark my year, but rather, I have a couple of annual golf tournaments I shoot that do the trick. The Pasadena Police Activities League, or PAL, held this year’s golf fundraiser at the beautiful Brookside golf course. I started shooting early when the competitors check in for breakfast. After the coffee had been drank, the breakfast burritos eaten, the practice swings and speeches, I got to drive a golf cart around to get some action shots on the course.

You guys.

Why is driving a golf cart like the most fun activity ever? I mean really! There’s a meditative quality to it… soothing even. I freaking love it.

Okay, I’m getting off track here.

Back to my favorite charity! This year’s tournament had many of the same cast of bitchin’ characters I’ve come to love and adore… Supporters of the organization, the people on the ground running the day to day operations, members of the PPD and the incredible individuals on the board. One of those superstars is Laura Berns of The Berns Team who was this years’ top sponsor.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from this year’s event… The annual marker indicating to me that summer is over and fall is now upon us.

The Pasadena PAL is such a gem of an organization, it continues to shock me that more people don’t know about them. The Police Activities League is a national organization that came to Pasadena in 1997. It partners the youth of the community with the men and women of the Pasadena Police Department in a fun, safe, and nurturing environment while providing academic and cultural enrichment. PAL offers homework assistance, various sports, and a wide variety of special activities such as robotics and arts classes that give students an opportunity to build character and form a positive relationship with our community’s law enforcement. Currently, the PAL program serves an average of 120 children a day in grades 4 – 12 with over 200 more on the waiting list.

The more supporters of the organization, the more kids they are able to let in the program. At a time in our country full of fear, unrest and division; programs like this that truly nurture relationships between those in the community and those that serve them, creating a dialogue that goes both ways, is absolutely imperative.  To get more information on how you can support the Pasadena PAL, click here.

In this case, said battlefield is a fun one. The Pasadena Police Activities League, or PAL, took the kids lucky enough to be in the organization on a paintball outing this summer. I put on my best crappy clothes, loaded up my camera gear and met them at Paintball USA in Santa Clarita ,on what might have been the hottest day ever. Like EVER. Oh. My. God. It was so hot. I wasn’t sure how well I’d be able to document the field trip since I didn’t want to put my camera gear (and myself) in the line of paintball fire, but it was worth a try.

It turned out to be way more fun than I had anticipated! It was pretty hardcore. The quiet tactical efforts of the warring teams kept you in a constant anticipatory state, making you very aware of your surroundings. You could feel and hear everything… The sweat dripping off your body, the snap of a twig 50 yards away from a soldier trying to gain position; the breeze as it moved the dirt around you. The quick, bup bup bups of the guns as they fired, spraying paint and dirt when they made contact and the “I’m hit! I’m hit! Hold fire!!” really made it feel real. While I don’t think I’d like to risk the inevitable welts that come with being a competitor, I’d document such an outing again in a heartbeat.

The Pasadena Police Activities League, or PAL, held it’s 15th annual Golden Badge Awards Dinner last week. This year’s commemorative “Through the Years” event honored Steve Brockmeyer of Bolton & Company, retired Pasadena Police Chief Bernard K. Melekian, the Salvation Army and current Pasadena police chief Phillip Sanchez. Guests dressed up in their sporty best and partied it up for a good cause. Jill at MHP Events hooked up Pasadena Convention Center for a beautifully staged and executed event. I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that DJ Severe, the official DJ of the Dodgers, kept the party going from the cocktail hour and beyond. That guy seriously rocks so hard.

We can yell and scream at what’s wrong, or we can put our energy into those things that work.

PAL works. I love them so much.

I had the absolute PLEASURE of going on a helicopter ride with the Pasadena Police Department. Colleague, client and friend, Jill Hawkins of MHP Events, was my partner in crime. IT WAS SO FREAKING COOL!!! It was no joyride for the guys working and there were quite a few things going on in the city that required the helicopter that day.  Seeing what they do and how they work was facinating.  Because I had my gear with me, I was able to photograph a particular street corner of interest to the cops at one point during the ride… Sooooooo basically I’m like an honoree PPD officer. All in a days work folks!

Of all the different kinds of fundraising events I get hired to shoot, golf tournaments are my favorite.  They are so much fun! I get to shoot people outside on beautiful landscapes, and at some point, I usually get to drive a golf cart which is way more awesome than I think it looks. The Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL)’s annual golf tournament is always a bright spot for me. I adore the organization; from the police officers that run it, the people that provide support and growth, and most importantly the service it provides to the community. Right now, it almost feels like it’s a secret gem, but it should not be a secret… The word needs to get out. Click here for more information and help spread the word. Start with checking out my favorite photos from the event and see how fun doing good can be.

The Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL) celebrated its annual Golden Badge Awards last week. Although this is my second year involved with the organization, I feel like it’s still a bit of a secret in the community that needs to be spread.

The PAL Center offers an array of activities designed to enhance the educational, athletic, and artistic experience of young people.  PAL continuously strives to realize its mission to “Encourage Pasadena Area Youth to be Good Citizens through a Partnership with the Pasadena Police Department.”

An average of 85 students participate daily in the after school program, with an average of 110 members actively participating in the summer program.  PAL members receive tutoring, homework assistance, personal development and computer training. Other activities include art classes, horseback riding, soccer, boxing, martial arts, golf and culinary arts.

The kids involved are picked up and dropped off by the youth advisors, providing a very helpful program for parents who work. I especially love it because they are not targeting “at risk” kids, but rather are servicing the community at large.

The Golden Badge Awards event is a fundraiser to not only keep PAL operational, but to grow its reach as well.   Javier Arroyo was the recipient of this years’ Golden Badge Award for all his continued support of the organization both in time, and in services as General Manager of Toyota Pasadena. Javier, who was born in Spain near the French border, moved here when he was 10. His can-do attitude has allowed him to thrive in work, family life, and his community involvement.

For over 30 years, Javier has volunteered with the Altadena Sheriff’s Department, currently volunteering twice a week with the department’s VIDA program, which highlights his love of working and mentoring children who have been misdirected.  He continually supports Law Enforcement, Fire and Safety Officers by sponsoring programs (such as PAL), donating services and volunteering his time.

The recipient of this year’s PAL Service Award went to Officer Anthony Riley. Officer Riley steped down this year from his post as the Director of the Pasadena PAL. His attachment to the organization runs deep… His first introduction was in 1984 when he worked as a PAL youth advisor.  Under his watch and leadership, the organization launched its technology program and purchased 13 new computers. The computer program was designed to teach students how to use computer applications as effective tools for advancement in the workplace and at school.

In 2014, Officer Riley’s vision was to expand on the educational component of PAL.  In doing so, Officer Riley with the help of the youth advisors, established a partnership with the Y.M.C.A with their youth and government program. This program has been one of the state’s premier youth leadership and civic development programs since 2001. This program provides the kids with the opportunity to experience government first-hand and to learn how to solve community problems through the democratic process as well as debate and discuss issues with their peers from throughout California. Also in 2014, PAL partnered with Pasadena City College and implemented the Robotics program. This program introduced members to the possibilities within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) career field.

The very awesome Officer Roxanne Haines, the new Director of PAL, will have some big shoes to fill.   That being said, anyone who has the pleasure of knowing Officer Haines knows that she too will knock it out of the park.

The fundraising event was a joyful celebration of PAL supporters and of course members of the Pasadena Police department, led by Police Chief Phillip Sanchez. Jill at MHP Events hooked the Pasadena Convention Center up. The room and food were incredible. Once the inspiring program finished, the DJ got everyone up and dancing, sending everyone away on a high note.

Even though the event was a success, more needs to be done.  Due to the lack of funding, there are over 100 students on the waiting list to get in.

Seriously, look into this organization… They are the real deal; led by, and encouraging the development of young people to grow into the types of people you want to have as your neighbors. Kind, trust worthy, intelligent, thoughtful, community minded, and fun individuals.

The next fundraiser is their annual golf tournament September 16th. Contact Jill at MHP events for more information on how to get involved, or to participate in the golf tourney.  She can be reached at (626) 791-1225.

The Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL) held it’s 13th annual Golden Badge Awards last week.  The award ceremony and fundraiser was a beautifully executed Vegas themed event by Jill at MHP Events replete with slight of hand magicians, and an awesome live band with a Dean Martin-esq lead singer that NAILED IT.

I was introduced to PAL last fall when I was hired to shoot their golf tournament fundraiser. As an individual whose heart is fiercely attached to social justice and equality, the news as of late involving certain police departments has been unsettling for me. When these stories arise, I can’t help but think about how the Pasadena Police Department seems to get it right. I have had a relationship with Chief Sanchez and his wife for several years now, and their involvement in the community is amazing. It doesn’t stop with them. I see members of the police force out in the community more than I see them in their cars on patrol. People know them. Many of them have deep roots in the community they are serving, and thus have a genuine attachment to the people and the character of the city. It is an ethnically diverse force that truly represents the community.

PAL is an organization that supports the youth in the community with activities designed to nurture and enhance the enrichment of young people. The PAL Center provides a safe and stable environment after school to do homework, socialize and participate in summer activities. The programs consist of culinary arts, mentoring, soccer, golf, computer programming, youth and government and robotics. Robotics! This year PAL students traveled to the state’s capital where they learned about government, the law and the legislative process. It’s all about the community, and the importance of supporting all of its members, not just the wealthiest among us. Needless to say, I adore the organization and the people that run it.

The Pasadena Police Activities League, or PAL, is a branch of the Pasadena Police Department that offers activities designed to enhance the educational, athletic and artistic experience of young people. The goal is to reach youth at an early age to support their development, and to provide a safe and stable environment after school to do homework, socialize and participate in activities. Some of the activities include cooking, art and music classes, horseback riding, soccer, golf, boxing and martial arts. That means they need to fundraise. Friends and colleagues, Jill and Inger at MHP Events have been involved in PAL for a while. I really am lucky to have such a good working relationship with event planners that are so involved in the community that raised them.

The golfers showed up at the Brookside Golf Course at what I believe to be the crack of dawn to check in, and eat breakfast. The early hour did nothing to stave off trash talk for the serious competition that was about to take place. I like that. This was a super fun event to shoot for a good cause, with good people. I’d say it was a pretty good day.
